Funny Story

Almost everyone considered Anupam a smart child. He was also there. Smart in studies, better in sports and, quick-witted. Only mom, dad, and younger sister Kumkum knew the secret that as soon as the night falls, her pampam starts ringing. Anupam was very afraid of darkness.

He was so afraid that leaving alone going alone in a dark room, even in dim light made him nervous. Because of that, they were not able to watch any movie in the cinema hall for a long time.

Anupam's beautiful, airy room was between Mom and dad's bedroom and Kumkum's room. Still, he used to enter Kumkum's room to sleep at night. Kumkum would get very irritated with her brother because Anupam would keep a big bulb burning like a night lamp all night.

Anupam would also be very upset at this weakness of his. He himself could not understand what was there in the dark that he was afraid of. Monster...Lion...? No. He knew that all these were found only in stories or in the forest. 'I don't know', 'Don't ask me anything' was his answer.

While returning home from the office on Saturday evening, my father brought a telescope project. The entire morning and afternoon of Sunday, Anupam and Papa sat together and made a complete telescope from a box full of spare parts.

Anupam was enjoying it a lot. He had no idea that this telescope would become a cause of trouble for him as soon as night fell. He noticed this when after dinner everyone got ready to go to the terrace to see the stars. This means Kummi also knew about this plan.

Anupam got angry, but his fear of darkness turned out to be even greater. Papa pushed him by his shoulders and took him to the terrace. Papa thought that after seeing the magical world of the moon, stars, and constellations, Anupam would get lost in them and his fear would also go away.

But nothing like that happened. Anupam's eyes were scanning the surrounding darkness more than the sights of the sky. The sky-high neem trees were shaking due to the wind. The peepal leaves were laughing continuously.

'Papa, what is this rustling?' Anupam asked.

'Maybe a chameleon is roaming around due to lack of sleep', Papa said very easily.

It was about to be half an hour, and Anupam's yearning to go back down was increasing continuously. Now even the father got angry at his timid son. It was fortunate that he did not slap Anupam. There was a fair amount of gossiping.

It was the season of affection gathering. There was an atmosphere of fun and enjoyment in the atmosphere. There was less emphasis on studies. One afternoon the class teacher came to the class and sat on the table. Without being told, the children knew that today was something special. Waving his hands in the air like a radio jockey, the teacher announced that we were going on a picnic.

The picnic will last for two days and two nights. Everyone is required to come to the picnic. The children jumped with joy. They started screaming and thumping the table in excitement. Here Anupam started feeling cramps in his stomach. Two days is fine, how will he be able to spend even one night away from home?

Seeing Anupam's hanging face on the dinner table at night, Papa asked the reason for it. Without stopping talking about picnics, Anupam also said that instead of roaming around for two days, he wants to stay at home and study. Therefore, the father should arrange for a doctor's certificate for him.

Papa knew why Pampam was thinking of studies instead of a picnic. He said in strong words that Anupam would have to go. Studies will continue. Opportunities to get together with friends do not come often. If you go on a picnic, you will come back having learned two things. Now Anupam felt uneasy eating and playing even in broad daylight.

Whatever happens in the darkness of the forest will happen, it is different if it gets exposed in front of classmates. The boy used to be very smart. At last, the day of the picnic arrived. The children boarded the bus happily. Everyone started walking, singing, laughing, and making noise. Anupam remained sitting frightened in his seat.

On reaching Jhamjhama Falls, he saw that 30-35 small tents were pitched in an open area in the middle of the forest. They all had to live and sleep here. Anupam got down from the bus with the Hanuman Chalisa book tucked inside his jacket. The teacher said that two children would stay in each tent. Choose your partner. This time Anupam had no dilemma. He jumped and caught hold of Nahar.

Actually, his name was Ajit and he was the judo champion of the school. Friends had named him Ajit alias Lion. The Hindi teacher had changed its name to Nahar. Nahar had said yes to becoming Anupam's partner, but there was a worried expression on her face. Anupam was happy that living with the judo champion, no one could harm him by emerging from the darkness.

The night was cold. After having dinner, Anupam and Nahar lay down in bed without joining the laughter of their friends. Without extinguishing the candle, both of them zipped up their sleeping bags. Anupam kept waiting for Nahar to switch off the lights and then switch off the lights. Then Anupam was startled by a sharp whisper. Then he realized that Nahar was asking him something.

'Are you afraid of the dark?' Anupam started revealing his secret. Hey, what was he looking at... Nahar himself was trembling. Nahar said that 'he is very afraid of darkness.' And a surprising thing happened, Anupam heard himself saying why be afraid of the dark? Now he removed the sleeping bag and sat up.

This was amazing. Anupam could not believe himself. He patted Nahar and said, “Friend, you have turned out to be a complete idiot.” do not fear. I am with you. You hold my hand and sleep without any worries.

Nahar became relaxed after holding Anupam's hand. 'But why are you smiling? Will you tell this to everyone?' Nahar asked.

'Seeing your condition reminds me of one such crazy boy,' Anupam said, staring into the darkness, 'but that is an old story.'
