Essay On Dussehra

Meaning Of Dussehra - The word Dussehra is made up of two Hindi words 'Dus' and 'Hara', where 'Dus' indicates the mathematical number ten (10) and the word Hara indicates 'annihilation/defeat'. Therefore, if these two words are combined, it forms 'Dussehra', which symbolizes the day when the ten-headed evil Ravana was killed by Lord Rama.

The Victory Of Good Over Evil – Dussehra is also known as Vijayadashami in some areas of India. If we consider keeping aside regional and ethnic differences, then the celebrations of this festival have only one purpose, to give the message of victory of good over evil.

In other words, this festival symbolizes the victory of good over the power of evil. If we look at Hindu mythology, it is said that on this day Goddess Durga had killed the demon Mahishasura. Other traditions also believe that on the day of Dussehra, Lord Rama fought and defeated Ravana, the great king of demons, proving that no matter how strong evil is, truth always triumphs.

From this, we come to know that the outcome of both incidents is the same, the victory of truth over evil is certain. The result of this is always the victory of light over darkness, truth over lies, and good over evil.

Dussehra Celebrations – The festival of Dussehra is celebrated with great enthusiasm and pomp throughout the country. Despite there being different cultures in India, it does not affect the enthusiasm of this festival in any way. Everyone's excitement and enthusiasm remain the same throughout the festival of Dussehra/Vijayadashami.

On the occasion of Vijayadashami, residents of the Indian state of West Bengal celebrate Bijoy Dashami which marks the tenth day of Durga Puja. On this day, the idols of the Goddess are taken out in a procession to immerse them in the river and immerse them. Married women apply vermillion on each other's faces on this day, while other women exchange greetings and feast on each other. In some places, there is also a tradition of worshiping weapons on this day.

This is a religious and traditional festival which every child should know about. It has been mentioned in historical beliefs and the famous Hindu scripture Ramayana that Lord Rama had worshiped Goddess Chandi to kill Ravana, only after which it was possible to kill Ravana who had received the boon of immortality.

Celebration Of Ramlila – Dussehra is celebrated to mark the victory of Lord Rama over the demons and King Ravana of Lanka. People also celebrate Dussehra by dramatizing the war that took place between them for ten days. This dramatic form is called Ram-Leela. In North India, people organize Ram-Leela by wearing masks and through various dance forms and also enjoy it.

Ravana Dahan – Following the said verses in Ramayana, they make giant-sized effigies of three great demons namely Ravana, Meghnad, and Kumbhakarna. After this, explosive material is filled in the effigies to burn them and huge fireworks are done. During this, a man plays the role of Lord Ram and shoots flaming arrows at the effigies to burn them. People usually invite some chief guest to play the role of Lord Ram and burn that effigy. This event is organized keeping security in mind in the open field in the presence of thousands of spectators.

People of all ages come here to enjoy this fair. Children look forward to this event the most and even insist their parents take them to watch the fireworks. They watch fireworks and enjoy the stunning views.

The festival of Dussehra has great importance in the Hindu religion. This program of Ravana Dahan unites people because its audience is not only from the Hindu religion but people from all religions. Most importantly, Dussehra teaches us that good always overcomes evil and light always triumphs over darkness.

We Need To Kill The Ravana Within Us

We burn the effigy of Ravana outside and show that evil is always defeated and truth always wins, but we do not think about eliminating the evil within ourselves. Vijayadashami is a very auspicious and historical festival. People should celebrate this festival with happiness by conquering the Ravana inside them. That was the era of Satyayug in which only one Ravana existed, whom Lord Ram had conquered, but this is Kalyug in which Ravana is hiding in every house. It is not easy to conquer so many Ravanas. Just as the light of a lamp is enough to destroy darkness, in the same way, a good thought is enough to destroy the Ravana within us.

Social Evils Related To Vijayadashami

Even on festivals of religious importance like Dussehra, some anti-social elements harass people by drinking alcohol. Some people with dirty mentality take advantage of the crowd and do shameful acts like theft and molestation. If these evils are kept away from society on the day of Dussehra, then the festival of Dussehra will become truly joyful.

Epilogue

According to the Hindu scripture Ramayana, it is believed that Lord Shri Ram performed Chandi Homa to please Goddess Durga and get a groom. Dussehra is also called Durga Utsav because it is believed that on the tenth day of the war, Mother Durga had killed the evil demon Mahishasura. The festival of Vijayadashami also brings new energy in the minds of people, the lesson of victory of good over evil, new desires, and positive energy in the minds of people. Lord Shri Ram defeated evil by killing Ravana and Mother Durga ended evil by killing Mahishasura. This Vijayadashami comes after nine days of worshiping Mother Goddess. On this day, dishes, etc. are prepared in everyone's homes.
