Neem Karoli Baba, also known as Neeb Karori Baba, was a Hindu saint and spiritual leader from India, famous for his devotion to Lord Hanuman. He was born in 1900 in the village of Akbarpur, Uttar Pradesh, and passed away in 1973. Known for his simplicity, humility, and immense spiritual powers, he attracted many followers from India and abroad, including well-known personalities like Ram Dass (author of Be Here Now), Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerberg.

His teachings focused on selfless service, love, and devotion, particularly to God and others. Neem Karoli Baba emphasized the importance of serving others as a path to spiritual growth and finding God. He lived a life of renunciation, often moving between different ashrams, and founded numerous temples dedicated to Hanuman, including the popular Kainchi Dham Ashram in Uttarakhand, which is still a pilgrimage site today. His legacy continues to inspire spiritual seekers around the world.

Neem Karoli Baba, born Lakshman Narayan Sharma in 1900 in Uttar Pradesh, India, is regarded as a revered Hindu mystic and saint, known for his miraculous powers, profound wisdom, and simple, loving approach to life. His followers believed he was a manifestation of Lord Hanuman due to his deep devotion to the deity and his ability to perform miracles.

Early Life and Spiritual Awakening:

Neem Karoli Baba was drawn to the spiritual path early in life. He left his home at a young age to seek deeper spiritual understanding and eventually became a wandering sadhu (holy man). It’s said that while traveling through India, he performed numerous miracles, like healing the sick, appearing in multiple places simultaneously, and providing spiritual insight into the hearts of those who came to him. His miracles were not the focus of his teachings, but they attracted many followers to him, both from India and abroad.

Teachings:

Neem Karoli Baba didn’t write any books or preach formally, but his core teachings were simple and direct:

  • Serve others selflessly: He emphasized seva (service), believing that by serving others, one serves God.
  • Love everyone: His message revolved around unconditional love and compassion for all beings.
  • Devotion to God: Especially through the worship of Lord Hanuman, he encouraged people to find God in all aspects of life.

His teachings inspired many Westerners, especially during the counterculture movement of the 1960s and 70s, when many seekers from the West were drawn to India in search of spiritual enlightenment. One of the most famous Westerners influenced by Neem Karoli Baba was Richard Alpert, later known as Ram Dass. After meeting the Baba in the 1960s, Ram Dass wrote Be Here Now, a seminal work on spirituality that brought international attention to Neem Karoli Baba.

Influence on Western Figures:

Neem Karoli Baba’s impact on Western culture goes beyond just spiritual seekers. Figures like Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, and Julia Roberts all had connections with his teachings or visited his ashrams. Steve Jobs traveled to India in the 1970s seeking enlightenment and visited Neem Karoli Baba’s ashram in Kainchi. Though Baba had passed away by the time Jobs arrived, the experience profoundly influenced him. Years later, Jobs suggested that Mark Zuckerberg visit the ashram during a challenging phase in Facebook’s early growth. Zuckerberg’s visit reportedly brought him clarity and peace.

Ashrams and Temples:

One of Neem Karoli Baba’s most famous ashrams is located in Kainchi Dham, Uttarakhand, which remains a spiritual hub attracting thousands of devotees annually. He also established various temples across India, especially ones dedicated to Hanuman, whom he revered deeply. His temples are known for their simplicity, reflecting the Baba’s humble life.

Legacy:

Neem Karoli Baba passed away in 1973 in Vrindavan, but his spiritual influence continues to grow globally. His legacy lives on through his devotees, who keep his teachings alive through service and devotion. His simplicity, compassion, and profound wisdom have left an indelible mark on the spiritual landscape of India and beyond.

For many, Neem Karoli Baba is not just a saint but a living embodiment of divine love and selfless service. His life and teachings offer a path of devotion, humility, and grace, inspiring spiritual seekers around the world.
