How Did Jagannath Rath Yatra Start, Know The Importance And History Of This Journey
Jagannath Rath Yatra is starting from 7th July 2024 this year. Jagannath Rath Yatra takes place every year from the second day of Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month and this Rath Yatra ends on Dashami Tithi. Lord Jagannath, who is considered to be the incarnation of Lord Krishna, along with his elder brother Balram and his sister Subhadra, goes out to ride a chariot in the city of Puri in Odisha every year and this journey is known as Rath Yatra all over the world.
The virtue of participating in Jagannathji's Rath Yatra is considered equal to a hundred yagnas. Experts say the preparation for the Rath Yatra starts from the day of Akshaya Tritiya with the construction of Shri Krishna, Balram, and Subhadra chariots. There is an 800-year-old temple of Lord Jagannath in Puri and Lord Shri Krishna resides in the form of Jagannath. Let us tell you how this historic Rath Yatra started and also know about the special things related to the three chariots.
How Did The Jagannath Rath Yatra Start
According to religious belief, one sister Subhadra expressed her desire to see the city to her brothers Krishna and Balramji. Then both the brothers lovingly prepared a grand chariot for their sister Subhadra and the three set out to tour the city on it. On the way, the three also went to their aunt's house Gundicha, and stayed there for 7 days after that returned to Puri after completing the city tour. Since then, every year the three siblings ride on their chariot and go to the city tour and visit their aunt's house Gundicha temple. In this, the chariot of Balram ji is in the front, the chariot of sister Subhadra is in the middle, and the chariot of Jagannath ji is at the back.
Importance Of Jagannath Yatra
The chariots of Lord Jagannath and his siblings are prepared from the ripe and cooked wood of Neem. It is called Daru. Nothing else is used to make the chariot except wood. Lord Jagannath's chariot has a total of 16 wheels and it is also bigger than the other two chariots. Some religious rituals are also performed during the Rath Yatra.
It is believed that just by seeing this Rath Yatra, one gets the virtue of 1000 yagnas. When all three Raths are decorated and ready for the Yatra, the palanquin of King Gajapati of Puri arrives and then the chariots are worshipped. After that, the Rath Mandap and the path of the Rath Yatra are cleaned with a golden broom.
Why Does This Chariot Stop At This Shrine Every Year?
During its journey, Lord Jagannath's chariot definitely stops for some time at the shrine of Muslim devotee Salbeg. It is believed that once a devotee of Jagannathji, Salbeg was unable to reach for the darshan of the Lord. Then after his death, when his tomb was built, the chariot stopped automatically while passing by that place. Then prayers were offered for peace for his soul, after which the chariot was able to move forward. Since then, every year during the Rath Yatra, Jagannathji's chariot definitely stops at the tomb of Salbeg which falls on the way.
