Black And White Aren't Colors At All

It is very common to have black and white colors in things seen around the world. But black and white are not actually colors at all. Along with black and white, gray color is also not considered a color. What is the reason for this?

There is a lot of black color around us like crows, black cats, black clothes, shoes, and even black butterflies. Color charts to teach kids about all the colors starting with black and ending with white. But the truth is that black is not actually a color at all.

White and gray are not colors either. In fact, in the language of science, something is considered colorful when it reflects or sends a backlight of a certain wavelength. For example, a yellow banana reflects the yellow color of the light spectrum and absorbs the other colors. Yellow light reaches the eyes of the viewer. Therefore, it appears yellow to the eyes of the observer.

Detecting color is the job of the human brain. A black object absorbs all intensities of the visible spectrum of light and reflects nothing. White things reflect all intensities of the visible spectrum. An example of this can be seen through a prism. The prism refracts the light into rainbow light. Meaning the light coming out of the prism breaks into seven colors. It is from these that a rainbow is formed.

So, would it be wrong to look at a black cap and say that this cap is black in color? It is not completely wrong because, in common parlance, black color is also considered a color like other colors. But in the language of science, black and white are called pure colors or achromatic colors.

Apart from black and white, seven colors also include grey. Currently, scientists all over the world are searching for the darkest black substance. As of 2018, this record is in the name of Wantablack. This material is made of carbon nano tooth which reflects only 0.035 percent of light. Therefore, things made of this substance appear flat. It is the darkest object ever seen after a black hole.
