Mahadev's Story

This is the importance of Adiyogi or Shiva – no such incident happened. There was no war, no conflict. He did not pay attention to the needs of the era. He gave means and methods to increase human consciousness in such a way that it remains relevant in every era. When people are deprived of food, love, or peace and you fulfill their lack, you can become the most important person at that time. But when there is no such scarcity, the most important thing for a human being is ultimately how to elevate oneself or develop oneself.

We just gave him the title of Mahadev because the intelligence, vision, and knowledge behind his contribution are amazing. It doesn't matter where you were born, what religion, caste, or class you belong to, whether you are male or female – these methods can always be used. Even if people forget them, they have to use the same methods because they leave nothing untouched within the human system. He did not give any sermon. He did not provide any solution for that era. When people came to him with similar problems, he simply closed his eyes and remained completely indifferent.

In the sense of understanding human nature, and finding a way for every kind of human being, this is indeed an eternal or everlasting contribution, not a contribution of that age or for that age. Creation means that what was nothing, came together and became something. He discovered a way to open up this universe and bring it to a state of zero.

Why Was Adiyogi Called Shiva

Therefore, we named him Shiva – it means ‘he who is not’. When ‘that which is not’ became something or ‘that which is’, we called that dimension Brahman. Shiva was given this name because he showed a way, a method – not just one, but every possible way how to attain ultimate liberation, which means going from nothing to nothing.

Shiva is not a name, he is a description. Like saying that someone is a doctor, lawyer, or engineer, we say that he is Shiva, the one who makes life void. It was slightly misunderstood as a destroyer of life. But in a way he is right. It's just that when you use the word 'destroyer', people take it as something bad. If someone had said ‘liberator’ then it would have been considered good. Gradually the 'one who makes zero' became 'the destroyer' and people started thinking that he was bad. Whatever you call them, they don't care – that's the nature of intelligence.

If your intelligence reaches a certain height, you will not need any morality. It is only because of a lack of intelligence that you have to tell people what not to do. If someone's intelligence is developed, he does not need to be told what to do and what not to do. He did not say a single word about what should be done and what not. The Yama and Niyamas of the Yogic system are the gift of Patanjali, not of Adiyogi. Patanjali came much later.

Patanjali is important to us because Yoga has been divided into so many branches that it has become ridiculous. Like 25, 30 years ago, if you needed a medical checkup, only one doctor was needed. Nowadays you need 12 to 15 doctors – one for bones, one for flesh, one for blood, one for heart, one for eye – it would go on and on.

Suppose, in the next hundred years, we will go into so much specialization that you will need 150 doctors when you need a medical checkup. Then you won't want to go because by the time you've made 150 appointments, and made them and understood 150 opinions, there won't be a need for it. Then someone will talk about combining all these and creating a family physician. This is what Patanjali did.

It is said that at that time there were more than 1800 branches of yoga. If you were to go through the entire process, you would have to learn in 1800 schools and do 1800 different yogas. It had become impractical and ridiculous. So Patanjali came and asked everyone to practice only eight limbs of yoga, putting them all in 200 sutras. If such a situation had not happened, Patanjali would have had no importance. This is not the case with Adiyogi or Shiva because no matter what the situation, they are always important. That is why he is Mahadev.
