Amma Ji's Pain

Kushal was very happy today. Because his holidays were starting from tomorrow and his father had already told him. We will go to meet Amma during the holidays.

Ravi ji had covered the journey from the small town of Bulandshahr to the flat in Delhi with great difficulty. It was not known when he went away from his home while working in an IT company in Delhi. Kushal gets married to Ranjana again. Due to the responsibility of all this, he had distanced himself from his parents.

Ravi Ji's mother whom the entire town knew as Amma. That's why Ravi also used to call their mother Amma. After their father's death, Ravi tried hard to bring Amma to Delhi. But Amma came to Delhi only later. After two days she said – “I don't know how you people live in this compartment. Son, you leave me in the village. What kind of life is there unless four people share in their joys and sorrows? Here no one even talks to each other.”

Ravi tried to explain a lot – “Amma, who will take care of you there?”

Hearing this, Amma said – “The whole neighborhood stands up.” Hearing my cough. All the daughters-in-law in the locality take more care of me than their mothers-in-law.”

Amma came back to her home. Angered by this, Ravi did not even call Amma for several months. Whenever Amma asked about your well-being on the phone, he would just say yes and avoid the conversation.

Today, after many months, Ravi was taking Ranjana and Kushal to meet Amma. The plan was to stay for two days and return leaving Ranjana and Kushal behind.

Kushal woke up on his own early in the morning. Ravi and Ranjana were surprised to see that he never got up for school. But he got up early in the morning and got ready to meet Amma.

Ranjana had packed some of Kushal's toys, clothes, and essential items.

Ravi, Ranjana, and Kushal all three reached home in their car. Wanted to surprise Amma, because Amma also did not talk much. She was angry with Ravi's behavior.

As soon as the car reached the house, Kushal immediately got down ran away, and entered the house. Ranjana was taking out the luggage and Ravi was parking the car.

Kushal, Ammaji, and Ammaji went into the house shouting. Amma ji was sitting in the big courtyard of the house and grinding spices. Looking at Kushal, she said – “My dear son, how did you remember Amma today?” Wait, let me wash my hands and come back.”

Saying this she started packing it. Then she started washing the cob and batta. Just then Ravi and Ranjana had come into the courtyard.

Ranjana touched Amma's feet. Amma hugged her daughter-in-law. When Ravi also moved forward and touched Amma's feet, she said - "Go, I don't talk to you, he is roaming around with his nose held high."

Holding her ears, Ravi said – “Leave it Amma, please forgive me now.” How much I wanted to be with you.”

Amma said – “Oh, I would have suffocated to death in that box.”

Seeing this, Kushal said – “Amma ji, turn Papa into a cock, in our school, they make cock into a punishment.”

Hearing this everyone started laughing. Ravi said – “Wait, I will turn you into a cock.”

Hearing this, Amma picked up Kushal in her lap and said, “Beware who says something to my grandson.”

Ranjana went to the kitchen to make tea for everyone. Amma ji started talking with Kushal. Ravi lay down on the cot lying in the courtyard.

When did two similar days pass like this? Ravi came back to Delhi. Ranjana and Kushal were left with Amma ji for eight days.

When Amma ji would go out with Kushal in the evening, every small and big person in the whole neighborhood would bow down and pay her respects, and the daughters-in-law would touch her feet. Amma ji would inquire about the well-being of the entire locality.

This was the daily routine. Even at home, from morning till evening, someone or the other kept coming to Amma ji with his problem. Amma ji used to listen to everyone and give suggestions. She would even scold someone. But no one felt bad about what he said. Everyone used to accept his scolding with a smile, they knew how much love was hidden in his scolding.

One day Kushal asked Amma ji – “Amma, how many guests come here?” No one comes to our Delhi.

Amma ji said – “Your father is running after money. Here everyone earns less and is happy with it. Stand by each other in happiness and sorrow.”

Kushal said – “Amma, can’t we stay here forever?”

Hearing this, a sad look appeared on Amma's face. Then she said – “Son, this house is yours only.” But who will explain to your father that if I die tomorrow, he will sell this also.

Hearing this, Ranjana said – “Hey Amma ji, what kind of talk are you, now you have to bring your daughter-in-law for Kushal as well.”

Kushal said – “Amma ji, tell me when will you bring the daughter-in-law for me?”

Amma ji and Ranjana both laughed and then Amma ji said – “Come, I will bring your daughter-in-law in the evening itself.” Otherwise, you too will find someone like your father in the city.”

Kushal was very happy to hear this, let's meet our daughter-in-law in the evening. Neither knew the meaning of marriage nor the meaning of daughter-in-law, I just wanted a daughter-in-law.

Ten days later, Ravi came to take both of them. There was sadness on Amma ji's face. Amma ji said – “When will he come now?”

Ravi said – “Amma will keep coming during holidays.”

Hearing this, Amma's eyes became moist and she said - "Come before I go on leave."

Hearing this, Ravi said – “Amma, why do you talk like this?”

After that, all three came back. From the next day, everyone became busy with their work.

One day after about three months, Ravi woke up Kushal at night – “Son, get ready quickly, you have to go to Amma ji.”

Kushal was not able to understand anything, there was neither any holiday nor any festival, so how were they suddenly going to Amma.

Ravi, Ranjana, and Kushal all three reach home. There was a crowd from outside the street itself.

Kushal saw Amma Ji lying in the courtyard covered in a sheet, a lamp was burning nearby. Both Ravi and Ranjana were crying. Kushal had now understood that Amma ji was no more. Sitting in Ravi's lap, he was staring at Amma ji. Then he got up and sat near Amma ji and said – “Amma ji, come and see the daughter-in-law for me.”

Hearing this, Ranjana started crying loudly. Ravi picked up Kushal and made him sit in his lap.

Kushal kept looking at Amma ji till late at night. When he opened his eyes in the morning, he was in a room of the house. He got up and came running outside. Amma Ji was not there. Ranjana was crying sitting with some women.

Kushal shook Ranjana and said – “Where has Amma ji gone?” Who took them?

Taking care of Kushal, Ranjana said - "Son, she has gone to God's house."

When Ravi returned after performing the last rites, Kushal hugged him and asked – “Papa, please bring Amma ji back.”

Ravi took Kushal in his lap and explained very lovingly that Amma ji had gone to God.

After the thirteenth, when everyone boarded the car to go to the city, Ravi locked the house. As soon as he sat in the car, Kushal said – “Papa and Amma ji were saying that you will sell this house after my death. Is this true?''

Ravi hugged Kushal – “No son, we will never sell this house. Rather they will sell everything from there and come here. I wish I had obeyed Amma and stayed with her so that I would have been with Amma in her last moments.”
