Adidev Mahadev is considered to be the progenitor of Hindu culture, who is almighty and omnipresent among all the gods and goddesses. Mahashivratri, the festival of worship of Lord Shiva, is celebrated on the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of Magh month according to the South Indian calendar (Amavasyant calendar). At the same time, according to the North Indian calendar (Purnimant Panchang), Mahashivratri is celebrated on the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month. The festival of Mahashivratri falls on the same date according to both Purnimant and Amavasyant calendars, hence the date of this festival remains the same according to the English calendar.

Importance Of Mahashivratri

The devotees of Bholenath celebrate the festival of Mahashivratri with great joy, devotion, and reverence. On this day, all Shiva devotees observe a fast and keep vigil at night to seek the blessings and mercy of their deity. Unlike other festivals of the Hindu religion, this festival is celebrated during the night. On the contrary, the festival of Mahashivratri is marked by fasting and meditation to control the darkness and obstacles prevalent in life.

The time of Mahashivratri is extremely auspicious because on this day the divine powers of Lord Shiva and Adishakti come together. On this day, the Mahashivratri fast is observed, and worship and meditation of Lord Shiva, introspection, social harmony, etc. are done in Shiva temples.

There are many mythological beliefs related to Mahashivratri. The importance of Mahashivratri has been described in Linga Purana, which includes a detailed description of observing the Mahashivratri fast and the importance of Lord Shiva and his symbolic symbols like Lingam. It is believed that on this night, Mahadev performed the Tandava dance which is a very powerful and divine expression of creation and destruction.

According to another mythological belief, it is believed that Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married on this day, hence this day is best for married couples to wish for a happy married life and for unmarried girls to wish for a good husband.

Astrological Importance Of Shivratri

According to Vedic beliefs, Lord Shankar i.e. Shiva himself is the lord of Chaturdashi Tithi. This is the reason why the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of every month is celebrated as Monthly Shivratri. In astrology, the Chaturdashi date has been said to be very auspicious. According to mathematical and astrological calculations, at the time of Mahashivratri, the Sun is in Uttarayan and season change is also taking place.

According to astrology, there is also a belief that the moon is fragile on Chaturdashi Tithi and Lord Shiva is wearing the moon on his forehead. Therefore, worship and worship of Lord Shiva strengthens a person's Moon which represents the mind. In other words, worshiping Lord Shiva strengthens willpower and also instills indomitable courage.

Mahashivratri Puja Method

To please your deity on the occasion of Mahashivratri, worship Lord Shiva in the following manner:

  • Anoint Shivling with water or milk in a pot made of clay. After this, Belpatra, Aak-Dhatura flowers, rice, etc. should be offered on Shivalinga. If there is no Shiva temple near the house, then a Shivalinga made of clay should be made and worshiped at home.
  • On this day, Shivpuran should be recited and Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, or Shiva's five-letter mantra "Om Namah Shivay" should be chanted. There is also a tradition of keeping vigil on the night of Mahashivratri.
  • According to the scriptures, worshipping Mahashivratri during the Nishith period is best. On this day, Shiva devotees can worship in any of the four Prahars at their convenience.
  • On the night of Mahashivratri, all the Shiva temples echo with the chanting of 'Om Namah Shivay' and everyone sings devotional songs in the honor of Lord Shiva.

Mahashivratri Story

There are many popular stories related to Mahashivratri, and we will learn about one of these stories. There is a mythological belief that Mother Parvati had performed severe penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband. As a result of this story, the marriage of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati took place on Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month. Since that time Mahashivratri has been considered extremely sacred.

Apart from this, another story related to Mahashivratri is described in Garuda Purana. There is a belief that on the day of Mahashivratri, a Nishadraj went hunting with his dog but did not find any prey. Troubled by fatigue and hunger and thirst, he went to the banks of a pond, where a Shivalinga was installed under the Bilva tree. To give rest to his body, Nishadraj broke some Bilva leaves, which also fell on Shivalinga.

To clean his feet, he sprinkled pond water on them and a few drops of water also fell on Shivalinga. While doing this, one of his arrows fell down and he bent down in front of Shivalinga to pick it up. In this way, unknowingly he completed the process of Shiva worship on Shivratri. After his death, when Yamdoots came to take him, Lord Shiva's followers protected him and chased them away.

In this way, the worship of Lord Shiva done on Mahashivratri out of ignorance yielded auspicious results, how much more fruitful would be the worship of Devadhidev Mahadev done with one's own thinking and devotion.
