Know The Interesting Story Related To Holi

Story Of Holika Dahan

According to Hindu mythology, a king named Hiranyakashipu, like many demons, wished to be immortal. To fulfill this wish, he performed rigorous penance to obtain a boon from Lord Brahma. Pleased, Lord Brahma granted Hiranyakashipu a boon and fulfilled his five wishes: that he would not die at the hands of any creature created by Brahma, that he would not die by day or night, by any weapon, on earth or in the sky, inside or outside. That he will not be destroyed, that he will not be killed by men or animals, Devas or demons, that he may be peerless, that he may have never-ending power, and that he may be the sole ruler of all creation.

After receiving the boon, Hiranyakashipu felt invincible. Anyone who objected to his supremacy, he punished and killed them all. Hiranyakashipu had a son, Prahlad. Prahlad refused to worship his father as a god. He continued to believe in and worship Vishnu.

Prahlad's faith in Lord Vishnu enraged Hiranyakashipu, and he made several attempts to kill Prahlad, all of which were unsuccessful. In these efforts, once, King Hiranyakashipu's sister Holika supported her brother to kill Prahlad. According to Vishnu Purana, Holika was blessed by Brahmaji with a cloth that could never be burnt by fire. Holika simply came and sat in the fire wearing the same cloth to burn Prahlad. As soon as Prahlad chanted the name of Lord Vishnu, Holika's fireproof garment came over Prahlad and he was saved, while Holika was burnt to ashes.

It is believed that since then, Holika Dahan has been celebrated every year for centuries to celebrate the victory of good over evil. The story of Holika Dahan symbolizes the victory of religion over sin.

Story Of Lord Shiva And Kamadeva

When Lord Shiva's wife Sati entered the fire and embraced death because of the insult shown to Lord Shiva by her father Daksha, he was completely heartbroken. He abandoned his duties and went into serious meditation. This caused a disastrous imbalance in the world, causing all the gods to become worried. Meanwhile, Sati was reborn as Goddess Parvati. She wanted to marry Lord Shiva but Lord Shiva was not interested in it and chose to ignore her feelings.

The gods then decided to send Kamadeva to influence Lord Shiva so that the marriage between him and Parvati would take place. Indra called Kamadeva and told him that the demon king Tarakasura could be killed only by a person who was the son of Shiva and Parvati. Indra instructed Kamadeva to awaken love in Lord Shiva so that he would agree to marry Parvati.

Kamadeva, along with his wife Rati went to Lord Shiva to complete his task. After reaching the place where Lord Shiva was absorbed in his meditation. Just then Kamadeva saw Parvati coming with her friends. At that very moment, Lord Shiva also came out of his meditation trance. Kamadeva attacked Lord Shiva with his 'Kaambaan', which had a deep impact on him. Lord Shiva was mesmerized by the amazing beauty of Parvati and his heart was filled with love for her. But at the same time, he was surprised by the sudden change in his behavior.

Lord Shiva looked around him. He saw that Kamadeva was standing on the left side with a bow and arrow in his hand. Now they were completely sure that it was actually Kamadeva who had done this. As a result of extreme anger, Lord Shiva's third eye opened and Kamadeva was reduced to ashes. Kamdev's wife Rati started crying bitterly. She requested Shiva to bring her husband back to life. After that, the gods also went to Lord Shiva and worshiped him. He told them that it was not Kamadeva's fault, he also told them the secret of Tarakasura's death. Then the gods requested him to bring Kamadeva back to life once again.

By then Lord Shiva's anger had subsided and he told the gods that Kamadeva would be born as the son of Krishna and Rukmini in Dwapar Yuga. A demon named Shambar will throw him into the sea. He will kill the demon and marry Rati, who will be living in a city near the sea. Since then the burning of Kamadeva by Lord Shiva is celebrated as Holika Dahan and the joy of his rebirth is celebrated as Holi.

Story Of Lord Shri Krishna And Putna

There is also a popular story about Shri Krishna and a demon named Putna. When Lord Krishna was growing up in Gokul, King Kansa of Mathura tried to find and kill him. Kansa decided to send the demon Pootna to kill all the children until he found Krishna. He started brutally killing all the infants in Kansa's kingdom. He also started killing infants in neighboring states. Quietly entering homes, she would pick up children while their mothers were either sleeping or busy with household chores. She also used to kidnap the children of parents working in the fields.

In her quest to eliminate all the children of the kingdom, Pootna reaches Krishna's village. She entered the village after sunset so that no one could recognize her. Wherever she went, she heard people talking about Yashoda and Nandraj's newborn child. Everyone seemed mesmerized by the divine form of the little boy.

Putna immediately knew that this was the child she was looking for. He decided to spend the night outside the village and go to Krishna's house in the morning. Putana disguised herself as a beautiful woman and reached the house of Yashoda and Nanda, where Yashoda welcomed her warmly. He introduced himself and requested Yashoda to allow him to feed Krishna. Yashoda also thought that the beautiful maiden was some goddess and agreed to Putana's request.

Putana took little Krishna in her lap and started feeding him and breastfeeding him with her poisoned milk. He thought that Krishna would become lifeless within a few minutes. Instead, Pootna suddenly felt as if the little boy was sucking the life out of her. She tried to push Krishna away from her but was unable to do so.

She reverted to her original form to scare the child. She started flying in the air so that the child got scared and left her. But everything was in vain. Krishna did not let her go and ultimately sucked the entire life out of Putana. The lifeless body of Putna fell on the ground and since then there has been a belief that burning Holika is a symbol of the end of evil like Putna.

The Tale Of The Demonic Mist

Another story is of the demonic Dhundi. The demonic mist of the Raghu kingdom used to harass innocent people especially small children. Dhundhi was blessed by Lord Shiva that she would not be killed by gods, and men nor suffer from heat, cold rain, or from any weapon. These blessings made him almost invincible but he also had a weak point. She was also cursed by Lord Shiva that she would be in danger from playful boys who would harass her.

The king consulted the priest, who told him that on Phalgun the winter season ends and the summer season begins. This would be an opportune time to drive away the fog. When the time came, the courageous boys of the village decided to get rid of him forever and drive him away from the village. The boys gathered a pile of wood and grass, set it on fire with chants, clapped their hands, and started circling around the fire.

They became intoxicated with Bhang and then followed Dhundi to the village limits, beating drums, making noise, abusing, and so on until Dhundi left the village forever. The abuses ruined her state of mind, she felt weak and helpless from within. Here also the tradition of burning Holika became popular as a symbol of the victory of good over evil. Even today, in honor of this belief, boys celebrate the festival of Holika Dahan by playing drums and making noise on the night of Holika Dahan.
