Brave Girl Story
Chutki was playing outside a small hut on the roadside. It was nearing evening. She was waiting for her father. Chutki's mother died of illness two years ago. Chutki was six years old at that time.
Since then father used to earn a little. He would spend more than that on alcohol. Used to wake up late in the morning. Then he would take some fruits to the street vendor and go out to sell them.
It was very late today. Chutki also had to cook food. She went inside and cleaned the kerosene lamp, took out its glass and cleaned it, then poured kerosene into it and kept it aside. Keep a matchbox nearby so that you can light it to cook food when it gets dark.
In the morning itself he had told his father – “Bapu, there is nothing to eat at home.” Come and get ration in the evening.”
Lakhan looked angry – “You have eaten your mother, now eat me too when you see that she keeps eating.”
Chutki remained silent. Similarly, she remained hungry till evening as there was nothing to eat. If her father brings something in the evening, she will cook it, otherwise after he sleeps, she will steal a fruit from his stall and eat it. Lakhan had beaten him badly after seeing him doing this last time.
But nothing can be seen beyond the hunger of the stomach.
Papa was late today. Would have come by now. Many doubts were arising in Chutki's mind. Did you get into a fight with someone after drinking? Are you sitting somewhere drinking and don't feel like coming home?
When it was too late, Chutki covered the hut and went to Banwari's uncle nearby. He said – “Uncle Bapu has not come yet.”
Banwari said – “Hey daughter, it is his daily work, he must be lying somewhere drunk. Don't worry, I will open the shop right now and go to see him. You go home. Don't wander alone in such darkness."
There was a small betel kiosk in Banwari. He was Lakhan's childhood friend.
Chutki comes back to her hut. It was starting to get dark. She lit the lamp and started waiting for Papa. Was in bad condition due to hunger. But there was nothing to eat.
After some time Banwari's uncle came running and said – “Chutki, Chutki.”
“What happened, uncle, where is Bapu?” Chutki asked quickly.
Chutki was shocked to hear what Banwari's uncle said, he said – “Daughter, in the afternoon the police took away all the street vendors from the market. In which your father also had it. After two hours, your father went to the police station after drinking alcohol and started creating a ruckus. The inspector got angry and locked him up.
Hearing this, Chutki started crying. Banwari's uncle said – “Daughter, do one thing and come with me to my house, how will you stay here alone?” Sleep with your aunt there. Maybe your father will be released by tomorrow.”
Wiping her tears, Chutki said – “No uncle, I am going to the police station.” Don't know what the policemen should do with Bapu.
Saying this, Chutki extinguished the lamp and started covering the Chuggi and then quickly walked towards the police post.
Banwari's uncle kept looking at that eight-year-old girl. How quickly children grow up. Then he called out – “Wait, Chutki, I am also coming.”
But Chutki did not hear anything and she walked towards the police post with fast steps. Banwari's uncle was walking fast behind him.
After reaching the police station, Chutki saw many policemen wearing uniforms going here and there. Then he saw many street vendors near the gate of the police post. Among them, he saw that one of the vendors also belonged to his father.
She quickly walked inside. Going near the gate of the post, he saw a proud police officer sitting on a chair in front, doing some work. Chutki got scared after seeing him.
She stood there not having the courage to go inside. Just then Banwari's uncle came from behind. He stood near her. From there he said – “Sir, this girl is very poor, she does not have a mother, leave her father.”
Then a constable came to them and said – “You have come again, I had chased you away just a little while ago.” Leave that drunkard who had taken the entire police station to task. If you don't run away from here, I will throw you inside too."
Banwari's uncle looked at Chutki with helpless eyes folded his hands in front of the constable stepped back stood outside the gate of the post and started waiting for Chutki.
The police officer was busy with his work. As if he didn't hear anything. The constable left from there. Tears were flowing from Chutki's eyes. He could not see Lakhan anywhere. She stood there frozen in fear.
After some time, the police station officer said to the constable while working - "Hey, go and give me some tea." Then his eyes fell on Chutki and he shouted - "Hey, what is this girl doing here so late at night?" Who is he?''
Chutchi got scared after hearing his loud voice.
The constable said, “Sir, she is the daughter of the drunkard whom we have taken inside.”
The police station officer invited Chutki inside with a gesture. Chutki went inside feeling scared – “Go, send your family members and we will get him bailed out tomorrow morning.”
Chutki said in fear – “Sir, we have no one.” My mother died, and only Bapu and I live in a slum on the side of the canal road.
The police station officer said in irritation – “Hey, someone must be bringing someone big, it is already night, go home.”
Chutki said – “Sir, leave my father, I have no one except him.” No one will come to rescue them.”
But the police station officer was not going to understand all these things. He said arrogantly, “I know all about this drama. The family members themselves hide and send away the small children. Run away and call someone older."
Chutki held the feet of the police station officer – “Sir, have mercy on us, no one is ours. How will I live alone in a slum? Let me also stay with Bapu or leave him.
The police officer held him by his arm and pushed him away. With the force of strong arms, she fell away.
Chutki started crying while lying there, she got up a little and saw that there was a scratch on her elbow due to which lines of blood were visible.
“Wow Inspector Saheb, wow, the little girl is being eyed very hard.” Hearing the unknown voice, the police station officer saw it. In front is Nirupama ji who is a social worker and an NGO. Drives. She was standing and clapping.
Seeing them the police officer stood up suddenly. Nirupama ji's reach was very high.
He stepped forward and picked up Chutki. Cleaned his clothes with my hands and then looked at his wound. After that, he asked one of the four people who came with him to take care of Chutki.
After that Nirupama ji went and stood in front of the police station officer – “Yes Inspector sir, why is this girl being punished?”
The police station officer was a little hesitant - "Nothing madam, he has been telling her for a long time, to go home and send someone older, but she is not agreeing. Her father has created a ruckus after drinking alcohol, that is why I have put her inside."
Nirupama ji said – “I heard everything, his neighbor Banwari's uncle is standing outside, he is the one who has brought me here. This poor girl is telling the truth. He doesn't have a mother, only his father.
You have put his father inside for drinking but what about the other street vendors whose street vendors you have brought to the police station.”
The police station officer said, “We had orders from above to clear the way.”
Nirupama ji said – “When your constables extort money from these poor people, you still take orders from above. First, you people allow street vendors to be set up and then remove them. A street vendor supports a family. Do you know that the stove was not lit in this girl's house today?
Nirupama ji further said – “Come, let us show you what report you have written against his father.”
The police station officer said pleadingly – “No madam, no case has been made nor has any report been written anywhere.” It has been closed just to teach a lesson."
Nirupama ji said – “Patil ji S.H.O. Call sir and tell him to reach here, I have called him.
The police station officer said, “Madam, why does she bother him? I leave her for now.” Bring Havildar Lakhan.”
Lakhan was brought before the police station. By now his intoxication had also subsided.
Nirupama ji said – “Don't you feel ashamed seeing the condition of this girl, she was lying at the feet of the police station officer, hungry and thirsty, to save you.”
Lakhan said – “Madam, we had only one bread and butter, you know, he should also be brought here. He also threw away all the fruits.”
Nirupama ji said – “You have money to drink alcohol, not for this hungry girl.”
Lakhan said – “Madam, please forgive me, this will not happen in the future.”
Nirupama ji – “Yes, Inspector Saheb, who will compensate for the loss they have suffered?”
The police station officer could not give any answer.
Nirupama ji said – “Return everyone’s confiscated goods.” But I will not leave you, you will have to answer for this later.”
Saying this she came out of the police station with Chutki. He made Chutki sit on the bench outside. Then explained something to one of his workers.
Nirupama ji sat next to Chutki – “Son, do you go to school?”
Chutki shook her head no.
Nirupama ji said – “Listen, Lakhan, Chutki will go to study from tomorrow and our organization will bear all the expenses for it. I am giving you a ration and also some money to bring fruits and sell them properly from tomorrow. My workers and I will keep coming from time to time. If you drink alcohol, I will take you inside.”
Then his worker brought food for ration and chhutki. Nirupama ji fed food to Chutki. After that, Lakhan and Chutki kept the ration from the street vendor and went towards their hut. Banwari's uncle who was standing outside was watching all this. They also went together.
After coming home, Lakhan said – “Daughter, please forgive me, from today onwards I will never drink alcohol. You suffered a lot for me.”
Chutki started crying bitterly. His fear was now flowing from his eyes. Banwari's uncle said – “Bring her up properly Lakhan, your daughter is very courageous. I had a confrontation with the police officer alone and my patience was lost.”
Lakhan wiped Chutki's tears and hugged her.
From the next day onwards he started working normally. Here, with the help of Nirupama Ji, Chutki started going to school.
