Pongal Rangoli
Pongal Festival Is Celebrated In Which State
Pongal is a major festival celebrated in South India. The actual meaning of Pongal is to boil. By the way, its second meaning is also New Year. Pongal is the name of the prasad offered to the Sun by boiling jaggery and rice.
There are four Pongals of this festival which last for four days. This festival completely dedicated to nature has been celebrated since ancient times after the harvest of crops. Harvesting rice from new paddy and preparing it as bhog, cleaning the bulls and houses and decorating them and praying for the long life of brothers and sisters like Bhaiya Dooj is similar to the festivals celebrated in North India. Festivals like - Chhath, Bhaiya Dooj and Govardhan puja take place.
The Four Types Of Pongal Are As Follows - Bhogi Pongal, Surya Pongal, Mattu Pongal and Kanya Pongal. Indradev is worshiped on the first day of Bhogi Pongal. Indradev is also known as Bhogi. People worship Lord Indra on the first day of Pongal for rain and good harvest.
The second puja of Pongal is in the form of Surya Puja. In this, new rice, moong dal and jaggery are put in new utensils and worshiped on banana leaves along with sugarcane, ginger etc. This prasad offered to the Sun is made only in the sunlight.
The Third Day Is Celebrated As Mattu Pongal. Mattu: Actually Nandi i.e. the bull of Lord Shiva is worshiped on this day. It is said that once Nandi, one of the main members of Lord Shiva, made a mistake and for that mistake, Bholenath asked him to go to earth in the form of a bull and help humans. This festival of Pongal is celebrated even today in his memory.
The fourth Pongal is Kanya Pongal which is celebrated with great pomp in a Kali temple here. Only women participate in it.
In ancient times, this festival was celebrated as the Dravidian harvest festival. In the inscription found in the temple of Tiruvallur, it is found that Kilutunga king used to donate land and temples to the poor on the occasion of Pongal. On this occasion, there was a tradition of dance ceremony and courageous fight with the bull. At that time, girls used to choose the most powerful person as their husband by garlanding them.
Story Of Pongal: It is related to the husband and wife of Madurai, Kannagi and Kovalan. Once on the request of Kannagi, Kovalan went to the goldsmith to sell the anklet. The goldsmith told the king that the anklets that Kovalan had come to sell were similar to the anklets stolen from the queen.
The king sentenced Kovalan to death for this crime without any investigation. Angered by this, Kannagi performed severe penance to Lord Shiva and asked him for a boon to destroy the king and his kingdom.
When the people of the state came to know about this, the women there together worshiped Kali Mata on the banks of Kililyar river. He prayed for compassion in Kannagi to protect his king's life and kingdom.
Mother Kali, pleased with the women's fast, awakened the feeling of compassion in Kannagi and protected the king and the kingdom. Since then this festival has been celebrated with great pomp in the Kali temple. In this way, the four days of Pongal come to an end.
