Lord Murugan is worshiped prominently in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Let us tell you that in Tamil Nadu, Lord Kartikeya is also known as Murugan, and the people there consider him a symbol of power and energy. He is called Tamizh Kaaduvul i.e. God of Tamil.
It is said that Lord Murugan (Kartikeya) is also the protector deity of Tamil Nadu. He is worshiped wherever Tamil residents live like Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore etc. Lord Murugan is also called by the names Kartikeya, Subramaniam, and Skanda.
Whereas in North India he is known as Kartikeya. People of the Yazidi caste in Arabia also worship him, he is their main deity. He ruled under the name Skanda in a particular region of North Kuru, a region near the North Pole. Skanda Purana is named after him. His birth also points towards a mystery.
According to Hindu beliefs, there are contradictory stories regarding his birth. According to the first story, when Lord Shiva's wife 'Sati' jumped into ashes in the Yagya of her father Daksh, Shiva mourned and got engrossed in deep penance. By doing this the universe becomes powerless. Demons take advantage of this opportunity and a demon named Tarakasur spreads terror all around the earth.
The gods have to face defeat. There is an uproar all around. Saddened by this, all the gods go to Lord Brahma and pray for their protection. Then Lord Brahma told them that the end of this demon Tarak is possible only through the son of Shiva.
Then Indra and other gods go to Lord Shiva. Then Lord Shankar tests Parvati's love for himself and is pleased with Parvati's penance and thus the marriage of Shiva and Parvati takes place at an auspicious time and auspicious time. In this way, Murugan (Kartikeya) is born. He later becomes the commander of the gods. Kartikeya kills Tarakasura and gives his place to the gods. According to the second story, Murugan (Kartikeya) was born from 6 different wombs of 6 Apsaras and then those 6 different bodies merged into one.
What is The Form Of Lord Murugan?
The form of Lord Murugan is that of a small child. There is a mystery to this childlike form of his. Mother Parvati had cursed him to never grow young. He is sitting on a peacock. A crown of peacock feathers sits on his forehead. There is a faint smile on his face. He has Vara Mudra in one hand and an arrow in the other hand.
Major Temple Dedicated To Lord Murugan
Palani Murugan Temple
According to the legend, when Maharishi Narad gifted 'Gyanphalam' i.e. the fruit of knowledge to Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati, Lord Shiva decided to give it to one of his two sons Lord Ganesha and Kartikeya Swami. For this, a condition was placed before both of them that whoever would circumambulate the entire universe first would get this reward.
After this, Murugan (Kartikeya) rode on his vehicle peacock to circumambulate the entire universe but Lord Ganesha stopped him.
He revolved around his parents and said that for him his parents are like the universe. Then Lord Shiva became pleased and gave that knowledge to Lord Ganesha. When Kartikeya Swami returned after parikrama, he became angry that his parikrama had gone in vain.
After this, Kartikeya Swami left Mount Kailash and started living on Shivagiri Mountain in Palani. Here Brahmachari Murugan Swami is present in the form of a child. It is said that Kartikeya started doing penance here in the guise of a saint. Later Shiva and Parvati themselves came to Palani to bless Kartikeya. The height of the mountain is 160 meters. This temple was built by Cheraman Perumal, the ruler of the Chera dynasty during the 5th-6th century.
Tiruchendur Murugan Temple
One of the 6 sacred temples of Lord Murugan. This temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan and his two wives, Valli and Deivanaya. According to Hindu theology, this temple has existed since the Vedic period. This temple has a huge nine-tiered gopuram or main entrance. Lord Murugan in the form of Senthilavandar faces east, however, the entrance of this temple faces south.
The specialty of this temple is that only this Murugan temple is situated on the sea shore whereas all the other Murugan temples in India are situated on the hilltops and in the forests. It is located in Tuticorin district on the Indian Ocean.
Kumaran Kundan
The structure of this temple itself is built on a hill. There are many sculptures on each floor, which are well decorated. According to a legend, the saint of Kanchi Math visited this area and after seeing the hill he thought of building a temple for Lord Murugan here. The saint left but the construction of this temple continued slowly and no one knows why the saint asked to build a temple here.
Shiva Subramaniam Swamy Temple
This temple is dedicated to Sri Muruganlong and his consorts Vallinyaki and Divananayaka. This temple was established when Lord Murgana won Diwananayaka and Vallinyaki in the war with love. The designs on its walls are intricate and the sculptures are worth admiring.
Thirupururakanaswamy Temple
This temple is dedicated to Hindu god Murugan. According to mythology, the divine character Murugan fought and conquered demons in three places: sea, land, and air. When a sage visited Murugan, the sage was very impressed by him. This sage was Pururhuj and this temple got its name from his name.
Murugan Temple Ooty
This temple dedicated to Lord Murugan is situated on Elka Pahad. The idols of Lord Ganesha, Lord Shiva Mother Parvati, and Lord Kartikeya and Navagraha are installed in this temple. Situated on the Nilgiri Mountains, this temple shows a picturesque view of the beauty of nature. Let us tell you that Ooty, the hill station of Tamil Nadu, buzzing with lush green valleys all around, is world famous for its beauty. Swaminathaswamy Temple
This temple is on the banks of the river Kaveri. It is considered one of the six sacred temples of Lord Murugan. He is called Arupadaidedu. The main deity of this temple is Swaminathaswamy. This temple is situated on a hill 60 feet above. This temple has three towers and all its sculptures are made of granite. According to mythology, Shiva's son Murugan got the name Swaminathaswamy by pleasing his father with the Pranava Mantra.
