History Of Indian Flag

It is very interesting for all of us to know what changes our national flag has gone through since its inception. It was discovered or recognized during our national struggle for freedom. The French Revolution and its slogans of liberty, equality, and fraternity had a deep impact on Indian nationalism.

In 1831, when Raja Ram Mohan Roy was going to England, he saw the French flag flying on a French ship. There were three colors in that too. The revolution of 1857 sowed the seeds of independence in the hearts of Indians.

When the Swadeshi movement gained momentum in the twentieth century, the need for a national flag was felt. Sister Nivedita, a disciple of Swami Vivekananda, first conceived it. Then on 7 August 1906, a rally was held in Kolkata to protest against the partition of Bengal in which the tricolor flag was hoisted for the first time. It kept changing with time but when the British decided to leave India, the leaders of the country became concerned about the national flag.

A flag committee was formed under the chairmanship of Dr. Rajendra Prasad and it was decided that the flag of the Indian National Congress should be accepted as the national flag with some changes, it should be a tricolor and Ashoka Chakra in the middle.

The Indian national flag has gone through many evolutions to reach its present form. In a way, it reflects the political development in the nation.

Some Historical Milestones In The Evolution Of Our National Flag Are As Follows -

The first national flag was hoisted on 7 August 1906 at Parsi Bagan Chowk (Green Park), Calcutta (Kolkata). This flag was made of red, yellow, and green horizontal stripes.

The second flag was hoisted in Paris by Madame Cama and some of the revolutionaries who were exiled with her in 1907 (according to some in 1905). This was also similar to the first flag except that it had only one lotus on the topmost stripe but seven stars represented Saptarishi. This flag was also displayed at the socialist conference held in Berlin.

The third flag came in 1917 when our political struggle took a definite turn. Dr. Annie Besant and Lokmanya Tilak hoisted it during the Home Rule Movement. This flag had 5 red and 4 green horizontal stripes one after the other and seven stars on it in the orientation of the Saptarishi. On the left and upper edge (toward the pillar) was the Union Jack. There was also a white crescent and star in one corner.

During the session of the All India Congress Committee which was held in Bezwada (now Vijayawada) in 1921, a young man from Andhra Pradesh made a flag and gave it to Gandhiji. It was made of two colors. Red and green colors represent the two major communities i.e. Hindu and Muslim.

Gandhiji suggested that it should have a white stripe to represent the rest of India and a moving charkha to symbolize the progress of the nation. The year 1931 is a memorable year in the history of the flag.

A resolution was passed to adopt the tricolor flag as our national flag. This flag, which is the ancestor of the present form, was saffron, white, and with Gandhiji walking with a charkha in the center. It was clearly stated that it had no communal significance and was to be interpreted as such.

On 22 July 1947, the Constituent Assembly adopted it as the national flag of Free India. After independence, its colors and their significance remained. Only the flag depicted the Dharma Chakra of Emperor Ashoka instead of the moving charkha. Thus the tricolor flag of the Congress Party ultimately became the tricolor flag of independent India.
