Navratri is the most important festival of Hindus. Navratri comes four times a year – in the months of Chaitra, Ashadha, Ashwin, and Magh. But mainly Navratri of Chaitra and Ashwin month is popular.

Nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshiped during the nine days of Navratri. Ashtami is celebrated on the eighth day of Navratri and Ramnavami is celebrated on the ninth day. Dussehra is celebrated in the month of Ashwin. Navratri is a symbol of purity, power, and divinity. The word 'Navratri' means 'nine nights'. It is the longest Hindu festival of the year, lasting nine nights and ten days.

Navratri is the most famous Hindu festival for worshiping the nine incarnations or forms of Goddess Durga, also known as Shakti or Devi. This festival is celebrated once during spring as Chaitra Navratri and once during autumn as Sharad Navratri. Sharad Navratri is celebrated during the month of Ashwin, which usually falls in September or October.

Navratri is celebrated with utmost devotion and the first day of Chaitra Navratri is also considered as the beginning of the Hindu New Year. It is dedicated to Goddess Durga, who is worshiped in nine divine forms as Nava Durga. People all over the world worship the Goddess during these days. People touch the feet of little girls and treat them like goddesses. Navratri is a very sacred festival of the Hindu religion.


Nine Forms Of Mother Goddess Are Worshiped During Navratri


Sharad Navratri falls in October and is considered to be the most popular and important Navratri among all the Navratri. On the tenth day of Sharad Navratri, Dussehra or Vijay Dashami is celebrated as the victory of good over evil. During Navratras, nine forms of Goddess Shakti are worshiped on nine different days. Mother Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhidatri are worshiped for nine days of Navratri.

On the first day of Navratri, “Ghatasthapana” is performed, in which a Kalash is filled with water and placed at the place of worship. People observe the fast light of an 'Akhand' lamp, which burns continuously for the entire nine days. Offerings are made to the Goddess and she is worshiped for nine consecutive days. On the tenth day, 9 girls are called home and Kanya Puja is performed.


What is Chaitra Navratri?


Chaitra Navratri is seen in North India, with the ninth day being known as Ram Navami. Ram Navami is also celebrated as the birthday of Lord Ram. Chaitra Navratri starts with Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra and Ugadi in Andhra Pradesh.

Navratris falling in the months of Magha and Ashadha are known as Gupt Navratri. That's why many people know about them. In these Navratri, Kali is especially worshiped and Tantra Sadhana is done. During fasting in Navratri, sago, khichdi, singhare halwa, and buckwheat flour rotis are eaten.
