Story - Whose Wife?
That was a long time ago. A handsome young man lived in a town called Dharampur. His name was Gandharvasen. Because of his appearance, many young girls of the city were attracted to him and wanted to marry him. Many proposals were sent to Gandharvasen, but he rejected all the proposals.
He was a great devotee of Maa Kali and used to visit the temple situated on the riverbank across the city every day to worship Maa Kali.
On that day also he had come to visit Mother Kali. When he came out of the temple after completing the puja, he saw a young woman washing clothes on the river. She was a very beautiful girl. Gandharvasena was fascinated by him.
The girl left after washing her clothes. Gandharvasen also returned home, but the beauty of that girl had settled in his mind. He kept thinking about her all night long. The next day when he went to the temple, he again tried to find the girl on the river, but he could not see it. He got restless. He went to the temple and made a vow in front of Mother Kali that if the girl became his, he would offer her head to her.
Even after coming home, he was not conscious of eating or drinking. As a result, he started getting weaker day by day. When his friend Devadatta saw his condition, he asked him, "Friend! Have you made this up?"
Then Gandharvasen told him everything about that girl. Seeing this condition of his friend, Devdutt vowed to find that girl and from village to village began to inquire about her. Eventually, he found the girl in a neighboring village. She was the daughter of a washerman.
Devdutt met the washerman and after telling about Gandharvasen offered to marry his daughter to him. The washerman accepted this offer and got his daughter married to Gandharvasen.
Gandharvasen was pleased. But in his happiness, he forgot the promise made in the temple of Maa Kali. Five days have passed. One night Gandharvasen had a dream, in which he saw his own shadow, which was saying to him – 'You are selfish Gandharvasen, you have not kept the promise taken before the Mother Goddess.'
Gandharvasen's eyes opened. He started to regret it. He thought that he would fulfill his promise. The next day he called his friend Devadatta and took him and his wife along with him and went to the temple of Maa Kali.
Reaching the temple, he said to Devadatta, "Friend, you wait for me here with your sister-in-law. I come first after worshiping."
Going inside the temple, Gandharvasen took out his sword and offered his head to the Mother Goddess.
When Gandharvasena did not come out even after a long time, the worried Devadatta went to the temple. There he became very sad to see the dead body of Gandharvasen. But the next moment he thought that surely Gandharvasen himself had offered his head to the Mother Goddess, but no one would believe it. Everyone will think that I killed him to marry his wife. What better thing I would do by living such a degrading life than it is to give up my life. He beheaded his body with the sword of Gandharvasen lying nearby.
On the other hand, Gandharvasen's wife was waiting for a long time. Seeing no one coming out, she herself went to the temple. Seeing her husband and Devadatta dead there, her heart cried out. Also, she got scared. She thought that my husband was not alive. Let everyone not slander her that she has killed her husband and his friend. She too was ready to lay down her life.
As soon as he raised the sword to lay down his life, the mother's voice was heard to him, "Stop, daughter! Don't give up your life. Tell me, what boon do you want?
She stopped and with folded hands asked the Mother Goddess for a boon, “Mother! Give life to my husband and his friend."
Mother Goddess said, "If you keep the heads of these two on their trunks, then they will come alive."
She did so and her husband and friend were alive. But he had made a mistake. He put the head of Gandharvasena on the torso of Devadatta and the head of Devadatta on the torso of Gandharvasena.
After being alive, Gandharva Sen and Devdutt started fighting for him.
After telling this story, Betal stopped and asked King Vikram, "Tell me, Rajan! Who will be the husband of that girl? If you do not answer knowingly, then your head will be broken into pieces.
Vikram replied, "The maiden's husband will be a young man with the head of Gandharvasen on Devadatta's torso."
Betal asked, "Why?"
Vikram said, “The head of Gandharvasen is fixed on the torso of Devadatta, and in the head is the brain, which controls the whole body. The person's identity on it, his face is also part of the head. Therefore, the husband of the girl would be the young man with the head of Gandharvasen on Devadatta's torso.
"You answered correctly Rajan. But you spoke and I went." Saying this, Betal flew away and went back and hung on the same tree of Masan.
