The festival of Sharadiya Navratri is starting i.e. tomorrow. Every day of Navaratri, nine different forms of Maa Durga are worshiped by Shailputri, Brahmacharini Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalratri, Mahagauri, and mother Siddhidatri on a ninth day. The festival of Navratri is celebrated with great fanfare across the country. People also send greeting messages to their loved ones in the joy of this festival.
The festival of Navratri was celebrated with great joy and gaiety before the Vedic era. There are some popular stories behind the start of this festival, due to which we have been celebrating this festival ever since. It is said that Lord Rama along with his brother Lakshmana and his beloved devotees Hanuman and the entire army worshiped Ravana for 9 days to seek blessings from Mother Durga for victory in the war before fighting. After worshiping 9 days, Lord Shri Rama raised Ravana's army on the tenth day and killed Ravana in that battle.
Since then it has been practiced that on the first 9 days, nine forms of Maa Durga are worshiped as Navratri and on the tenth day Ravana is slaughtered, hence it is known as Dussehra. Ravana is killed on the day of Dussehra, so this day is still celebrated in the country by burning effigies of Ravana and winning over the evil of good.
According to another story, a demon named Mahishasura attacked and took away all the gods including Surya Dev, Agni Dev, Vayu Dev, and Indra Dev, the God of heaven. Since the gods had previously given Mahishasura the boon of being invincible, no god could withstand them, so all the gods praised Goddess Durga for fighting the demon Mahishasura and killing her to free us from its wrath.
Believing the pleas of the Gods, Mother Durga fought with Mahishasura for nine consecutive days and killed Mahishasura. Since then Maa Durga has been worshiped for nine days and she is celebrated with joy so that just as Mother slaughtered Mahishasura, in the same way, Mother Durga ends the evils of our life and inspires us to walk on the path of goodness and Bestow blessings
