Why is the Dussehra festival celebrated?

In a country with a large population and mythological beliefs like India, this festival is celebrated by everyone according to their traditional beliefs. Two major events are described in Hinduism scriptures behind celebrating this festival. The first event in the world is related to Maa Durga and the second is known to Lord Rama.

Mother Durga killed Mahishasura

According to Hindu scriptures, there used to be a huge demon named Mahishasura in ancient times, who had raised his terror from heaven to earth. The Mahishasura demon had such powers that no deity could stand before him, then Mother Durga was requested to destroy the demon Mahishasura.

Then, Mother Durga, showing her radar form, fought with a demon named Mahishasura for about 9 days. After that, on the day of Vijay Dashami, Mother Durga put an end to the demon Mahishasura because good was won over evil on this day, hence on this day, Dussehra was celebrated as a festival.

Lord Rama killed the arrogant Ravana

When Lord Rama was 14 years in exile, the arrogant Ravana fraudulently abducted Mother Sita. Lord Rama pleaded with Ravana to return to Mother Sita safely, but Ravana was so arrogant that he did not listen.

Lord Rama then planned to fight Ravana and along with Bhai Laxman, Sugriva, Hanuman Ji, and Vanar Sena planned to bring Mother Sita back safely. But the need to cross the sea to reach Lanka, therefore, a bridge of stones was built by the monkey army known as Ram Sethu whose remains can still be seen from India to Sri Lanka.

After Lord Sri Rama reached Lanka, there was a fierce war between the egoistic Ravana and Rama in which Lanka was completely destroyed and on the day of Vijay Dashami, Lord Shri Ram crushed the egoistic Ravana's ego and killed him.

It is worth noting here that Ravana was much more knowledgeable and powerful than Lord Rama but still he was killed.

This teaches us that if the ego of knowledge is misused then its end is certain. On the day of Vijayadashami, the truth was won over untruth, hence the Dussehra festival is celebrated.

Events on Dussehra festival - On the day of the Dussehra festival, there are different cultural programs in which people celebrate with great pomp and gaiety. On this day, people sing and dance, share sweets, drums are drowned, and happiness is seen everywhere, the major events on the Dussehra festival are as follows -

Durga Puja - Dussehra festival is celebrated for nine days in many states of India like Bihar Assam Jharkhand West Bengal Orissa Gujarat Tamil Nadu Andhra Pradesh Karnataka etc. During these 9 days, devotees keep fast and worship Mother Durga in the morning and evening. In this, a different form of Maa Durga is worshiped every day because every form of Maa Durga definitely has some significance.

Special idols of Maa Durga are placed in the street-mohallas and temples depicting all the forms of Maa Durga.

This scene is very interesting and devotional. After the aarti of Maa Durga, prasad is distributed among all the devotees, which is considered as a blessing of the mother by the devotees. On the day of Vijayadashami, tableaux of idols of Maa Durga are taken out and they are immersed in a pond or sea.

Tableaux - On this auspicious festival of Dussehra, special tableaux are organized in which different types of tableaux are taken out in all the places, where the idols of Maa Durga are taken and the whole village and city are roped with dancing songs and finally The idols of Maa Durga are immersed in water.

At some places, tableaux of all the characters of Ramlila are taken out, in which a lot of drums are played and fireworks are also performed.

Arms worship - Another ritual is also organized by people who believe in the Kshatriya religion in connection with the Dussehra festival in which they worship their weapons. Since the Dussehra festival comes after the end of the rainy season, King Maharaja goes out only after the rainy season to do battle and hunting so he first worships his weapon.

Ramlila stage - The Dussehra festival is associated with Rama and Ravana, hence the people of North India stage the Ramlila in these 10 days in which real people depict the lives of all the characters of the Ramayana period.

In which the description of Lord Shri Rama mainly from exile to the slaughter of Ravana is done.

Ramlila is staged at a fixed place in all cities and villages where everyone gathers and enjoys Ramlila in the evening.

People are told through Ramlila how the arrogant Ravana's arrogance was broken by Lord Shri Ram and how he was also killed. The main purpose of the staging of Ramlila is that goodness always prevails in conveying this message to the people.

Mannequin Combustion - On the day of Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, on which day Ravan's effigy is burnt in which the effigies of Ravana are made from wood and paper and firecrackers are filled in them.

Nowadays, effigies are burnt between Ravana as well as Meghnath and Kumbhakaran in which arrows set fire to their knees, yet effigies start burning in the grip of fire.

Importance of Dussehra festival in history

Dussehra festival is also very important in the history of India because in ancient times the king used to go to war on the day of Dussehra or listen to this day to do some auspicious work because it is believed that on this day whatever The work is done is definitely successful.

There is also an important example of this when Maratha Ratan Shivaji fought Aurangzeb, he chose this day and protected Hinduism.
